Question: Cat raw diet? What to feed & is this okay?

( Back )

Answer #1:

- - Why don't you go with Purina Cat Chow. They have been in business for years. I give it to my 4 cats & they are not fat & they love it. Cat's are not humans. They are our pets, even though we love them. Give them Cat Food. . .

Answer #2:

That should be plenty of food. Not enough bone though and I am not sure how not enough but definitely not enough.

I did have the information on cats calcium requirement but lost it. What is works out to in practice though is to feed the same amount of bone that would be naturally present in a prey animal's body. I believe a typical cat requires 300-400 mg per day.

When I feed my 3 cats beef chunks, they're unable to eat beef bones, I sprinkle on a about 1/6 teaspoon of Kal brand bone meal powder which contains 2000mg (2g) of calcium per teaspoon. Such a meal would be 1/3 of their day's food.

Your cat will also need some liver - 5% of her diet.

Taurine should not be a concern because it is present in all raw meats. If you want to be on the safe side you can add 150-200mg or so every day. Taurine supplements are sold in health food stores, vitamin shops, and by online supplement retailers. It comes as a powdered in 500mg capsules which you can open and sprinkle on the food.

I almost never feed my cats ground meat. A typical raw meal for my cats is a small chicken leg or a medium thigh hacked into several pieces with a dressing of a tablespoon of pureed chicken liver and a chicken heart or two for each cat. This would be about a third of their daily menu. My cats are much smaller than yours - combined weights are 22-23 pounds.

Here is a site with information of making cat food using a grinder. If you don't want to invest in a grinder, read it anyway, it has a lot of information.

Answer #5:

Definitely make sure you read up, its not just about raw meat, you need to consider the balance of meat, bone, organ, and blood to make sure the cat is getting all the nutrients she needs. There are mixes available on the internet for delivery if you don't want to make your own, and its really not more expensive than a high quality food. The links are excellent, and worth taking the time to read. Its a great and incredibly healthy choice for your cat tho!!

The pet food recall scared us into making our own cat food at home. We did alot of research into cat nutrition requirements and went through alot of trial and error trying out new recipes for the cats - seeing what they liked and what they didn't. We ended up with quite a few super yummy recipes. Our friends begged us to share the recipes with them and we realized there were probably lots of other cat owners out there that would love to try these cat food recipes out on their cat too! So, 123 CatFood.com came into being. It really is as easy as 1-2-3.
