Question #1:

Wellness Core for cats, how much wet food to feed?

I'm getting a kitten soon and I'm planning on switching her over to Wellness Core wet and dry food. The lady who I'm getting her from will have her on a mixed diet of raw and dry foods. And although I would love to keep feeding her raw, I'm a college student so buying her a high quality food that is close to the raw philosophy will be a bit easier on me at the moment. Anyway, since Wellness Core is such a rich food I'm wondering how much should I be feeding her? She will be around 12 weeks when I get her and I plan on feeding her the wet food twice a day in the morning and at night. Plus leave out some dry food for her to nibble on throughout the day.
So how much of the wet food should I give her, is about a tablespoon in the morning and at night enough? Remember she'll have access to the dry food too 24/7

Question #2:

Switching from one cat food to the next?

I know that when switching my cat from one food to the next I have to do it gradually over the course of the week, but is that only one brand to the next or one type to the next as well? I feed him Purina Cat Chow Complete Formula but I'm switching to the indoor formula. Do I have to wean or can I just switch?

Question #3:

Question about grain free dry cat food?

I want to switch my cat to a better cat food. When I adopted him, he was and still is on dry science diet (which is crap). I've read that wet food is better for cats than dry, mostly because of the moisture content and fewer grains which cats don't need.

So I'm wondering, wouldn't a grain free dry cat food suffice? The cost of good wet food can get pretty expensive over time and I'm already paying to feed 3 large dogs a quality food.

I'm thinking that a grain free dry food would give all of the benefits of wet food besides the moisture, but my cat drinks enough water on his own.

Please no cynical answers, just answer the question. And I've already read enough articles/posts about ingredients and 'what a cat needs' so I don't need a lecture either.
It's not that I am willing to spend money on the dogs and not the cat. I am not feeding the dogs top of the line food because I can not afford it. I am also not looking for top of the line cat food for the same reason.

I take care of all of my pets as best as I can, and they are happy and healthy, so don't judge me for not spending tons of money on overpriced food that most likely won't make much of a difference over medium grade food.

I asked here to get a variety of answers from people who have cats. I am more familiar with dogs than cats because I have been around them my whole life. I can't ask the vet for advice because they recommend crap food for both the cat and the dogs. I have read the articles and done the research but I need to find a food to fit my budget.

Most people on this planet have a budget, whether they have a pet or not.

Question #4:

Why is my cat wheezing?

I have a cat that was found in a tool shed in my back yard when he was about 3-4 weeks old. It was during the summer and I didn't want to take him right away if the mother was in the process of moving her kittens and he just happened to be the last of her litter. Every morning he would still be there so I bought formula for him for a bout two or three weeks before switching him to solids. He is now about 8 months old and a little over weight because he will eat my older cats food as well. I've separated their eating spaces so she eats separately from him and before him. When I play with them with my kitty-friendly laser, he chases after it like it's the last bit of food in the world and he hasn't eaten in weeks. He makes a wheezing sound sometimes when he runs after it but once he stops running it stops. What's going on?
He eats. A lot. He's on the upper end of healthy weight. It was a simile...

Question #5:

How to repel mice from my tack locker?

How do I keep the mice out of my tack locker?
My tack locker in the barn has mouse droppings everywhere. Why the barn where I ride doesn't have barn cats or at least some mouse traps I'll never understand, but it's their barn and I suppose they'll do what they want. However, I see mice running around everywhere I look and my tack locker gets mouse dropping all over it. The lockers are wooden and built into the wall. And no, I don't keep any food inside it.

Does anyone know anything that repels mice? Cat fur? LOL. Somebody told me that mice hate the scent of dryer sheets, so I thought I might try that. But doesn't sound too plausible to me. Please give me suggestions for how to repel mice from my locker, not how to kill or trap mice on the entire property. It's NOT my barn and they will not accept any advice from me on their huge mouse problem. It's pretty gross though...
Again, not my farm so I can't get a cat. Putting poison or traps in MY locker won't make any difference considering there's 30 other locker w/o traps and a zillion other places for the mice to live. I don't have access to an outlet at my locker, so the electronic gadget won't work either. Surely they make some sort of mouse repellent???

Question #7:

Why won't my 19 month old listen to me?

No matter what I do my daughter won't listen anymore. I understand she will be soon hitting the terrible two's and everything but she used to listen to me before. For example she will go into the pantry in the kitchen where that cat food and the cat litter is and I have to tell her at least twenty times a day to stay out of it. I even put blockades there in order for her to stay out but she always finds a way around it. How can I get my daughter to listen to me without making me scream at her??

Question #8:

Should I put down a pet just because he is old?

I have a cat who is 20 years old. I give him special food for his kidneys and a feline joint health gel I add to his food. He walks very slowly doesn't seem to be in any kind of pain because I carry him often and he doesn't complain. I have had him all my life and the only problem is that he is blind and he pees all over my house. He does #2 outside in the back yard or in the litter box but #1 he wants to do anywhere around my house. So the smell is horrible and I constantly have to watch him when he is inside and cleaning up after him. So my question is should I put him down already. He is very old but he gets around and still walks, eats, etc. The problem is with the peeing since he is blind. And I can't fill the floor up with pads because I don't know where he will pee next. I also have used a lot of cleaners that say that the cat won't come back to same area again but that doesn't seem to work. Has anyone had this problem? Should I keep trying or just put him down already after all he has had a full life.

Question #9:

Why is my cat so overweight and what can I do about it?

We adopted our cat a year ago from a high-kill shelter to have a companion for our other cat. He was 12.5 lbs then. In the past year, we discovered that he had heart worms and in the process, while trying to figure out what was causing his vomiting, we changed his diet to something far more healthy.

Luckily he survived and is now quite healthy... despite his weight. He is almost 14 lbs. We feed him only the healthiest food ($30 for a small bag of dry food) only at two designated times of day.

We even tried changing to canned food but that was bad all around. Not only did he gain more weight but suddenly the cat boxes were very noticeable and the foods we tried were all very... um... fragrant and smelled up one part of our home for quite some time, twice a day, every day. Back to the old food....

For a while, we tried putting him on a 'diet' by feeding him the 'diet' proportions but that only initiated extreme destructive behavior. He would scratch and pull up the carpet next to his food bowl until someone walked up to see what he was doing. I will admit, that I gave in three times to his begging. Seriously three and only three... and that's because it was four in the morning (the begging started earlier and earlier as the diet progressed.)

When we switched back to regular proportions, his destructive behavior ebbed but to this day, he still scratches on things when he's hungry.

I don't understand. My other cat used to be able to have her food out all day and she would only eat what she needed. She's lean, trim, and healthy. Both get plenty of exercise but now I have to feed them in different rooms otherwise my female gets bullied away from her bowl. Things are pretty stressful... I just want what's best for both of my cats because they are like my children.

Ultimately, I may have to take him back to the vet for advice or hire a pet behavioralist. Before I do that, I was hoping I may find success stories from some of you wonderful folks here on Y!A first.

Any suggestions?

Question #10:

Why is my cat constantly meowing? and other few bits.?

This is a bit long so please bear with me.

In Sept 09 we moved into our new house, it has an allyway down the side of the house for access to our house, and also the chemist below us use it as their business entrance to. (our landlord is the owner of chemist)
Well there was always a cat pooping down that allyway and i always insisted it wasn't our cat as he is afraid of the allyway, which i have noticed whilst being in our garden. But we still cleaned it up as its just not nice.

Fast forward to last month and we get a letter from our landlord complaining about the cat pooping and saying if we dont stop our cat doing it we have to get rid of him. They tried to say that our cat is the ONLY cat in the whole area... :S

Then that very day the cat poo stopped, and has been like this for the month. Nothing there at all.
(which furthers my belief it wasn't our cat and it was another cat in the area and it has moved away)

Well since the letter and the stopping of poop everywhere, our cat has been meowing constantly. He always has food and fresh water and unlimited access to the outdoors world. He gets constant attention to.

And then to add onto this, a few weeks ago, he started coming in and laying with my partner. Then after a while he would get up and do the meow, then pull his ears back, get into hunting position and attack my partner. He wont do this to me at all, but im heavily pregnant so we think thats why.

So does anyone have any answers? Thank you in advance :)

Question #11:

Cat raw diet? What to feed & is this okay?

I am considering starting a raw diet for one of my cats, Oreo. She weighs just under 10lbs and is going to turn 6 yrs in May.
Would ½ cup ground meat (turkey, beef, chicken, etc.) & a chicken wing each day be too much? Too little? Enough?
I figured that she needs to be fed 0.20lbs or 100 grams of food a day so I'm not sure...
Thanks for any help!

Also, how can I include enough taurine in her diet? Is there a supplement I can give?
Cat raw feeding sounds much more complicated than dog raw feeding, but I will read all of the links you guys gave me. thanks :)

Question #12:

My cat is vomiting everyday. What is her sickness?

My cat is only a year old and was a premie. For the last few weeks she's been vomiting, it's been the worst this last week were she has been vomiting all her food everyday. Her personality has changed, she used to be sweet and loved attention and being held, now she ignores me and doesn't really go near anyone. She has started to lose fur and is loosing weight. She seems to have pain in her ribs.
I know we need to take her to a vet, but i want some help to know what might be her illness. so that i know what to do now.
we are trying to find a home for her, my mother lost her joba nd we have to move across the country,we cant afford to take her to the vet if it is just something that can be cured with certain foods, trust me im looking, i only asked so that i could get advise as to where to look, if it gets worse we'll have to take her to the pound and ask the vets there to do something, that is our last option. i dont want to do that cuz they might keep her and put her down.
and p.s. she isn't in too much pain since she's purring on my lap and playing with my necklace as im typing this. she goes through mood swings, right now she's acting normal.
she just ate a can of wet food. im waiting to see if she keeps it down.

Question #14:

I can't get my cat to eat dry food.?

I have 2 cats, the younger one I've had since he was a kitten,he eats dry food Orijean. It's the best food out there. I have another older cat that I recently adopted, he is 4 years old and when I got him 4 months ago, his previous owner had been feeding him all sorts of canned food which is not good for him...whiskas, fancy feast. He eats 3-4 cans of the tiny cans (85g) of Fancy Feast a day, and at $7 for a box of 12, thats $56 a month. Not only is it expensive, its bad for him. As soon as he stops eating he is cryiing for more. Its junk food of course, but this is all he'll eat. I've tried just taking it awa and putting out the dry food, and even mixing the dry with the wet, but he won't touch the dry-he eats around it and I've gone a day and a half and he won't touch a bowl of dry food. What to do?

I go to bed and he's crying, I wake up in the middle of the night and he's crying. If he's not sleeping, he's crying. The younger, healthier one is starting to eat of the older one's wet food plate too when I'm not looking and is beginning to get a belly on him.

Question #15:

Cat Is Losing A Ton Of Weight?

So I am just looking for some advice and opinions.
I have been doing my research and we plan on taking my cat to the vet in a 8 days when the pet insurance finally kicks in.

My cat is a 3 year old tabby. Recently, he has lost a ton of weight. His personality is still the same, affectionate and cuddly, and he is still playful with his brother. He has lost so much weight that you can now feel his spine and ribs quite a lot. I would say he is now about 5 pounds when he used to be around 10 MAYBE 11. He was never a big cat, but the weight difference is very noticable.

We have tried different foods, hard, soft, cheap brands, expensive organic brands, and no change. We thought it might be territorial and he might not be getting access to the food, so we put food dishes throughout the house for him. He is always on the kitchen table so we put one there, but he oesn't touch it. So I thought maybe he is getting sick? Worms?

But here is the catch, he won't he cat food, but he will eat most human food.
Milk, chicken, beef, ham, you name it. And he eats it like a starving beast.
Is my cat being an extreme picky eater?
He has never done this before, so it is quite random how he suddenly decided he no longer wants cat food.

Any advice?
***Thanks for all the advice.
You are all very passionate.
Please do not think I am neglecting my animal.
He is going to the vet tomorrow.
The not eating has turned into can't eat.
Thank you all for your advice and let's hope all goes well.

Question #16:

What's up with my cat?

My husband and I left the house for about 6 hours. The cat was fine when we left but we came home to about 5 little piles of mustard yellow vomit and her eyes are watering almost like she is crying a little (weird). She is still grooming herself and eating and playing with the dog but looks a little wobbly sometimes. There is nothing she could have gotten into that we know of. We don't have any poison in our house and the only food accessible to her is her own. Is it just an off day or what's wrong? Any ideas?
There is no poison in our house (as I said before). The only thing that would come close is the stuff in under the sink in the bathroom which always has a closed door.

Question #17:

Is there any way I can get my school involved in helping this animal shelter?

My school does a lot of volunteer stuff like around the holidays my school gives toys to hospitals and we shovel the elderly lawn whenever it snows. I always try to help out.
However, the animal shelter I volunteer at is going down pour, there isn't enough food, cat litter, toys, cages there. There was an ad in the newspaper a few days ago about it so some people are donating stuff. I really want to help out and get my school involved. Animals are my only friends (Sad huh, I have no friends)
Is there any way I can get my school involved?
Please and thank you.
Waffle out.

Question #18:

Why is my cat acting like this?!?

Lately my cat will not eat. I have tried every kind of food and all he does is sniff it and maybe lick it a bit and then spazzes and runs away. I'm scared that this might be serious.. do any of yours cats do this?! I also have noticed that he lost a lot of weight in the last week. About 3 monthes ago he had something wrong with his eye for about a week, it went away on its own though. He has also been acting very sketchy, by sketchy I mean when I go to pet him sometimes he runs away like he's very scared. I'm very worried.
What could be wrong with him?!
Should I take him to the vet?!
please help.
And oh yeah, he's 9 years old.

Question #19:

How much money would it cost to buy a hamster?

I've been asking my mom for a hamster for a really long time now and she finally said yes! The only thing is is that I have to pay for it all on my own. How much money does it cost for the actual hamster, the cage, tubes and the little crawl ball thing, toys and whatnot, and food?
Also, I have two cats. Would this be a problem to bring a hamster into my house?
Do hamsters smell a lot?
What is a good type of hamster to get?
and finally, I'm probably going to name it Hammy, but what are some other good names for it?

Question #20:

cat won't eat! help!!?

Hi,

my cat had recently eaten a poisonous corn plant.I took her to the vet, they gave her subcutaneous fluids. she had very bad diarrhea and was throwing up quite a bit. however, she seems to be doing much better now. the vet told us to give her pepcid AC every 12 hours to help her hold her food down.

the problem is that she will not eat any substantial amount of food. she willingly drinks water though. I bought two jars of baby food yesterday and after some coercing on my part she willingly licked off the baby food from my fingers and began chowing down from her food bowl which is a good sign. she eats the baby food fine after a little bit of coercion. but she will not go near her regular cat food.

is there any way that I can try to get her to eat her regular cat food? i mean she nibbles at one or two pieces of kibble but walks away. I know I can't feed her baby food forever, which is why i need to get her on the cat food.

any help would be much appreciated. thank you.
